Music therapy is an evidence-based practice where a board-certified music therapist uses music to reach non-musical goals. Music Therapists use music/ musical instruments to increase functional communication, motor skills, cognitive skills, social-emotional needs, and more! The KEY is that we are using music to unlock a non-musical response.
Short answer: Anyone! Music Therapists works with a variety of populations including, but not limited to: Developmental Disabilities (Autism and Down Syndrome), Motor Disorders, Neurodegenerative Disorders, Mental Health, Pain Management, Alzheimer's, Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury, and Brain Injury.
A Music Therapist is someone who has completed an undergraduate or a higher degree from an accredited Music Therapy Program. Music Therapists are required to complete coursework, a 1200 hour clinical internship, and pass a board-certification exam in order to practice. Music Therapists can also receive additional trainings to specialize in specific settings such as Neonatal Intensive Care Units, and Neurologic Music Therapy.
